Does insurance cover psychiatry in Indiana?

What parity law requires, how telehealth is covered in Indiana, and the exact questions to ask your plan before booking.

Psychiatric care is covered by nearly every commercial plan in Indiana, by Medicaid, and by Medicare. Whether a specific visit with a specific provider is covered — and what you actually pay — is a different question.

This guide explains what the rules require, where the gaps usually are, and exactly what to ask so there are no surprises after the first appointment.

What parity law requires

Federal mental health parity rules require plans that cover behavioral health to do so on terms comparable to medical care: copays, deductibles, and visit limits cannot be more restrictive than they are for a comparable medical specialist.

Parity governs the terms of coverage, not the size of the network. A plan can be fully compliant and still have very few psychiatric prescribers in network near you — which is why network status is the first thing to verify.

How telehealth is covered in Indiana

Indiana requires most commercial plans to cover telehealth services that would be covered in person, and Indiana Medicaid covers behavioral health delivered by telehealth. Medicare covers telehealth mental health visits, with periodic in-person requirements for some services.

Coverage is not identical to cost. Confirm whether your plan applies the same copay to a video visit as an office visit, and confirm the provider is in network for your specific plan, not just the carrier.

Five questions to ask your plan

Call the member services number on your card and ask these directly. Write down the reference number for the call.

  • Is this provider in network for my specific plan and group number?
  • What is my copay or coinsurance for an outpatient behavioral health visit (CPT 90792 for the evaluation, 99213/99214 with add-on codes for follow-ups)?
  • Have I met my deductible, and does behavioral health apply to it?
  • Do I need prior authorization or a referral?
  • Is a telehealth visit covered at the same rate as in person?

When self-pay is the better math

With a high-deductible plan, the first several visits are often paid out of pocket anyway — at the plan's negotiated rate, but out of pocket. A transparent self-pay rate can end up similar or lower, without prior authorization or visit-limit friction.

Self-pay also means fewer records disclosed to the insurer. If you use self-pay, ask for a superbill so you can submit for out-of-network reimbursement, and check whether your HSA or FSA applies.

How we handle it

Ageless Minds Wellness contracts directly with several major plans and offers transparent self-pay rates. Share your insurance details when you request an appointment and we verify benefits — in writing — before your first visit, so you know your expected cost before you commit.

Common questions

Is telehealth psychiatry covered by insurance in Indiana?

In most cases yes. Indiana requires most commercial plans to cover telehealth comparably to in-person care, and Indiana Medicaid covers telehealth behavioral health. Confirm your specific copay with your plan before the first visit.

Do I need a referral to see a psychiatric provider?

Most PPO and marketplace plans do not require a referral for outpatient behavioral health. Some HMO plans do. Ask your plan directly — it is the second question on the list above.

What if my plan is out of network?

You can still be seen at our self-pay rate. We provide a superbill you can submit to your insurer for possible out-of-network reimbursement, and HSA and FSA funds generally apply.

Parity guarantees fair terms, not network access — verify network status and copay for your exact plan before booking, and price self-pay alongside it.
